Vetulonia

Vetulonia, a suburb of the borough of Castiglione della Pescaia, is situated on a hill west of Buriano, at about 300 metres above sea level, on the southern slope of Poggio Ballone.

The town is of the Etruscan period, as witnessed by Dionigi di Alicarnasso.  According to whom Vetulonia during the VI century B:C: was allied with Latina against Rome, (Silio Italico) which as an Etruscan town forced the hand of the Roman power (and the Archaeological excavations tend to confirm this thesis, at least, that part which regards the Lictorian period) Plinio and Tolomeo.

Vetulonia reached its maximum splendour between the VII  and VI centuries B.C: when it was an important trade centre, where many goldsmiths worked. After the glory of the Etruscan period Vetulonia declined, and it was in 1181 that the Castle of Colonna, born out of the necessity for a fortification to defend the population.

The famous Mura dell’Arce,(walls) known as Cyclopean, can be found in the town.  Probably built during the VI-V century B:C..It is here there is proof of the existence of an important urban centre. The recovery of many coins (above all copper) demonstrate its autonomy and economic hegemony.

In the surrounding area numerous archaeological Etruscan remains have been found of which a necropolis and a long tomb – la Via dei Sepolcri.  Among the tombs which you can visit are the notable Tomba del Diavolino and the Tomba della Petrera.

The town still has a few ruins of the original Etruscan walls, and recently a museum has opened which conserves numerous finds from the Villanoviano period and Roman period.  While other archaeological finds are still kept today at the National Archaeological Museum in Florence.

The Abbazia di Sestinga Nuova (the abbey) of which no ruins remain, undertook an important role between the complex monasteries of the province of Grosseto.

Near the location of the Case di Vetulonia we can find the Castle of Casallia, a medieval complex which was originally a convent.  Finally in the Piaza Veluna, a visit to the archaeological museum of Isidoro Falchi is merited.  Here Etruscan relics etc found in tombs and remains of the city are kept.
